I’m on my way back from Brunette Blvd, I’m just going to take the scenic route past Balayage Bypass before I head home sweet home to Blonde Bay.
Having been a blondie my whole life, I have seriously enjoyed relaxing into being a brunette this year. Oh my goodness, no, blondes do not have more fun – at least, not at the hair salon and not in the finances. Being brunette is cheap and fast in comparison to blonde.
Money and effort aside, once a blonde, always a blonde. I will eventually get the highlights cranking at full force once more, but I’m easing back into it. It seems the latest hair colour trend is going to be perfect for my transition/adventure. So balayage it is.
What the heck is balayage? you ask. Well, I’m glad you did, because I’m here to tell.
Balayage is a hair colouring technique that may only be performed by an experienced professional hairstylist, or someone with a lot of balls, who has a friend or sister who won’t kill them slowly and painfully if they bodgy it up. There’s a bit of a trick to it, but, to laymen old me, it’s also a bit of a slaphazard (yep, just made that word up off the cuff, I’m that awesome) approach to it.
See, I know this sounds like something the Mad Hatter would say, but one of the main purposes of balayage is to leave you with significant regrowth. Proper nutty, right?! And I actually feel stupid saying this, but this makes your hairstyle more relaxed and disguises your regrowth… yup, isn’t it ironic and all that. Look, I know we could get into some kind of sciencey (yep, that one, too!), or existential-type discussion about this, but I think the important thing to do is accept it and move on.
So the hairdresser-type people get your hair, right, and they foil and freehand your lighter colour, focusing on the underneath and/or ends of your hair, giving it a lovely grown out look. Balayage is a french word, which means ‘to sweep’, so imagine your hair is being swept with colour. Sounds magnifique, no?
Famous faces who have rocked this look include Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Biel, and my fave, Isabel Lucas.
