Bridal Show Model Makeup

Caloundra Wedding Collective 2015 - images by Lou OBrien_0087

I was recently asked to be part of something very special. The inaugural Caloundra Wedding Collective Open Day. I have lived in Caloundra the majority of my life, so it really excites me to be part of the local Caloundra wedding industry.

I love being one of the official Caloundra makeup artists in the Collective!

I was lucky enough to do the bridal makeup for the models for the bridal fashion show. There were seven gorgeous girls all up, so I asked my lovely assistant, Kirra, to help me out with gussying them up for the occasion.

It is always a pleasure to work alongside Sandi and Ash from Rolling Scissors, as well!

The lovely Lou of Images by Lou O’Brien took these gorgeous images that I cannot stop looking at! They are ahmayzing! And I really love all of these different wedding makeup and hair styles we got to create. What a fun day of play – uh, work…

{INVITATION} Wedding Soiree

Contemporary Country Collage

This weekend, please come and join me – and many other lovely wedding pros – at The Lakehouse Sunshine Coast for a wedding event like no other. Our Wedding Soiree is a collection of four group collaborations. We will each be recreating a styled shoot from a past volume of The Bride’s Tree Magazine.

I have been in many a meeting, shooting back and forth group emails, and oh the texts and phone calls – rife. All in the name of collaborating with my team to come up with something amazing to showcase to all of the lovely brides and grooms coming along to The Lakehouse Wedding Soiree.

Our mini wedding set up is based on the Contemporary Country shoot we put together awhile ago. It’s still one of my all-time favourite shoots. I love the whole vibe of the classic elegance-meets-relaxed country with a little rustic thrown in for good measure.

Originally we worked with Wholehearted Studio to put this shoot together, but Styling Hue will be stepping in to fill their big shoes at The Lakehouse Wedding Soiree.

I’d love to meet you, lovely brides, so please come along and enjoy – step into our little creation and the three others, which I’m sure will also be absolutely stunning. There will be fashion shows and one lucky couple will win a $15,000 luxe wedding on Saturday, so make sure you’re there 10am – 4pm.

Here are some more images of the lovely Ashlee from our shoot and her romantic grey smokey eye with peaches and cream complexion and perfect peach pout.

The Wanderers for The Bride’s Tree Magazine

It was the gypsy life for us for a day, as we embraced nature, music, creativity and love. This was definitely my kind of shoot! This shoot provides some unique inspiration for anyone considering a Noosa beach wedding.

Austinmer Wedding

I’m a little bit biased about this one… but I super love this wedding. It just so happens to be the wedding of my good friend, Talina. She married her love, James, in a beautiful park ceremony in at Glastonbury Gardens in Austinmer, just south of Sydney,  close to where they live.

This was an extra special wedding for me – I got to be both bridesmaid and makeup artist! Talina and I chose a gorgeous Forever New navy bridesmaid dress. We only looked at one, bought it online, and we were set. The other bridesmaid, junior bridesmaid and I wore our own silver flats, and carried beautiful white blooms.

The bride tied in her navy theme by adding a belt and bling brooch to her stunning strapless mermaid-style wedding dress from Cheboom Bridal, Port Kembla.

Talina is originally from the Sunshine Coast, but moved south to be with her man. He’s a real stand up bloke, and she’s a top chick, so they make a great pair. This is evident in the photos by Emma Nayler Photographer, who flew down with me to shoot the wedding.

Animal lovers at heart, Talina and James made sure to include all their fur babies in their wedding day. There is a touch of both the beach and the country in Talina and James’ wedding days – their puppies Rascal and Rex joined their mum and dad on the beach, then the happy couple headed out to the paddock where Talina’s horse, Ruby, lives. Wedding day beauty ensued.

Both bride and the bride’s mother wanted very natural makeup. I actually had to convince Talina’s mother that I wouldn’t make her feel overdone. She was a makeup convert by the time I finished with her, and said she felt lovely and just like herself!

One very proud Father of the Bride!

The bouquets were so beautiful! The team at Bunches at Bulli did an amazing job.

That’s a happy groom, if I ever saw one!

Our hair got did by the awesome ladies at Moore Street Hair in Austinmer

We had a lot of fun!

Rascal and Rex were happy little vegemites with their trip to the beach to see Mum and Dad on their wedding day!

Ruby, the horse, loved a visit from her gussied up Mum! She even got a little prettied up for the occasion herself.

Sneak peek: Woods and Bloom shoot

This little sneaky peek is from a shoot I recently worked on, for which originally I was only supposed to be a model. A MODEL you guys! Let’s be clear, this is not something I am known for. I am not exactly your typical model type. In fact when I was first asked, I honestly thought Hayley from Wholehearted Studio, who styled and coordinated the shoot, had accidentally asked the wrong ‘Sally’! I was very flattered to be thought of, however, and decided what fun it would be!

As it turned out, they ended up requiring my makeup artistry skills, so I had the pleasure of also prettying everybody up for the shoot as well!

Above is the very sexy Roxy, who wears a pair of fresh flower earrings! I’ve never seen anything so cool in all my time. Catherine from Woods & Bloom created these, along with all of the other floral arrangements on the shoot.

Each of us three models were given a very different look. Roxy here above was our vintage lass. Her rad red hair was swept into a relaxed vintage-inspired style with curls pinned at the back by Mia from Evalyn Parsons Hair. For her makeup, I went with a dramatic smokey eye in deep warm browns to complement her red tresses. I gave her a very vintage matte pink cheek colour, and finished off her look by once again tying in the warmth with a hot copper lipstick.

The lipstick I used on all of us girls comes from a palette I ordered from overseas, which is super high in pigment and I did not need to top up anybody’s lipstick the entire time. It stays nice and moisturised and holds its colour perfectly. Magic!

I adore these photos by Carla from Willow + Sage Photography. I can’t wait to share more with you, but these few little morsels will have to do for now.

This was a very different experience for me being in front of the camera as a MODEL.

Since I have lots o’ hair, I was appointed the “bohemian” look. As such, my look was all about the lashes, with only a little soft pink definition, flushed cheeks and a pastel pink lip. My brows are naturally very dark, so it’s a dramatic look against my blonde locks, which were given the tousled look by Mia at Evalyn Parsons Hair, with some braids and Catherine and Hayley gave me a sprinkling of daisies. I loved my daisies!

How freakin’ AHMAYZING is this floral headpiece! I was blown away by the creativity by Catherine from Woods & Bloom. This seriously impressive creation rests atop the crown of the lovely Lisa.

Lisa wore her own wedding gown from her recent wedding, and for her makeup I went for a simple and lovely bridal look using natural browns and soft pinks as she was our “classic” bride. I used natural-looking lashes to enhance those pretty peepers, too.

The location for the shoot was the absolutely gorgeous Bridle Guest House Maleny, which I am now desperately in love with. You can take your own horse there to stay, how cool is that! Makes me wish I had a horse…

Straight to the Heart

This little babe has shot an arrow straight through the heart of oh so many people. None more than his beautiful Mum, Hayley, of Wholehearted Studio fame, who aptly named her little heart-stealer, Archer.

Emma Nayler and I got to welcome Archer to the world in a beautiful way – with me hussying up the new mum, and Emma taking some location shots here on the Sunshine Coast.

For the knowing mothers, and those of you about to embark on motherhood, I am sure you are wondering how a mum of a newborn managed to look so bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, and I can let you in on a wee secret. Hayley had a little catnap while I was doing her makeup right before the shoot, that’s how!

Pretty with pinks and a focus on the eyes was the makeup brief for this pretty lady, and her perfectly cut bob was easy to style

Archer's lovely and talented Grandma handmade his outfit for the shoot. Isn't it just darling!

It's clear to see these two are made for one another

As a stylist, Hayley effortlessly concepted the look for the shoot. Loving the fresh flower hair piece like you wouldn't believe

There is nothing quite like the love shared between a mother and son. I'm so very excited for you to start on this amazing journey of motherhood, my beautiful friend

Get Mineraled

So… recently I was asked to be an eyebrow model. I kid you not, it was a real thing! There’s a film and everything, which will be played in all the Get Threaded franchises throughout Australia. Yes, this does make me nervous, if you were wondering!

I do love and adore Get Threaded with all my little heart, though, and I was more than a little bit chuffed to be asked to model and do the makeup for the film and photo shoot. The fabulous founder, Liz See,  is based here on the Sunshine Coast, which is simply grand for me and my forehead caterpillars. Liz is not only a threading genius, but she has created some fantastic mineral products, just for making boring old brows into browsers!

The products I am demonstrating application of in this film are Get Mineraled 00 Brow Dust, Brow Gel and Brow Illuminator, all of which reside in my professional makeup kit, but are usually the first products out when I arrive at a job, because it’s a given they will come into play! The brow dust is the perfect colour and works with both dark brows like mine and for lighter brows as well.

I don’t stop at illuminating the brows with the Brow Illuminator, oh no, I sweep that baby across the tops of cheekbones, around the inner corner of the eyes and even apply just a touch on the bow of lips to create a more plump look.

There was a great team, who worked on this shoot. The before and after photos are by Emma Nayler Photographer, and the film is by Ben from Innovate Media.

Before threading and Get Mineraled application, and after. I did my own makeup for the shoot, and that of the other models. We went for a very natural look to allow the brows to take centre stage. I can't believe what a difference a bit of brow attention really makes!

Married at the Station

Carly married her Anthony at Yandina Station with a purple smokey eye. And I adored her for that! It was a lot of fun to do makeup that was quite non-bridal for a bride.

Love this Sunshine Coast hinterland wedding venue, and the images by Alison Beal Lifestyle Photography.

My Makeups, Wedding

Vanuatu, Baby!

I was super thrilled for my best pal, Kate, when she got engaged to the love of her life, Andy, while on holiday in Perth. I was super excited when she started planning her wedding and asked me to attend. I was over the moon when she asked me to be her makeup artist for her wedding in Vanuatu!

My excitement continued when Kate hired one of my absolute favourite wedding photographers, Emma Nayler, to travel with us to paradise to be the official wedding photographer! Look at these bee-yoo-ti-ful images right here. They are outstanding!

I loved Kate's "Boho Ballerina" look

Kate wanted warm colours for her wedding makeup, to tie in with the tropical island location, her colouring, and the bronze beading on her dress. I was able to create a gorgeous natural look, that still allowed her pretty green eyes to pop like nobody's business. For her cheeks and lips I used coral products, which worked well with the bronze tones on the eyes, and also tied in with the bridesmaid dresses

Beautiful sisters, Charlotte, Kate and Sarah. For the bridesmaids I used similar warm colours on the eyes, but to make them a little different from the bride, I gave them a smokey eye look with black liner on the inner rim

My Man Cub and I at the wedding having a grand time drinking Welkam cocktails. My son wears a palm leaf "watch" one of the staff on Erakor Island made for him. He kept it on for two days, bless him!

We enjoyed a super fun and relaxing holiday in Vanuatu. The wedding was on Erakor Island, where most of the guests stayed. The staff were amazing, the location was divine and we would go back in a heartbeat. I’d love to explore Vanuatu further, and simply enjoy the beautiful, welcoming local people.

Our Family Portraits

I can’t tell you how fortunate I feel to have these little babies in my possession. My son, Jonah, and I absolutely treasure these images we had taken by the incomparable Karen Buckle. As one of the Sunshine Coast’s very top shelf wedding photographers, Karen is so booked solid with weddings, she rarely does family portraits, so we were beyond honoured when she offered to take ours.

Planning for this shoot, I was so ridiculously excited. I had been a super fan of Karen’s for such a long time. And just so you know, I’m not just saying this is a flippant manner. Like, I’m saying, I was a hardcore fan, so much so that the first time I met Karen, I gushed at her a mile a minute to the point of embarrassing. I get kind of weirdly star struck on occasion… I have in my time working in magazines and PR met heeeeaps of celebrities. I’m talking A-listers – Harry Connick Jr, The Dixie Chicks, Justin Timberlake, Michael Buble – just to name drop a few. Was I affected by any of them? Not a wink. Twice I have felt a bit star struck. The first time was when I interviewed the Sea Shepherd‘s Captain Paul Watson (crazy impressive man.) The second was when I met Karen Buckle.

Now that seems a little ridiculous, because as much as I am still Karen’s biggest fan, I have also come to know her as the most humble, sweet person, and you can’t help but feel completely at ease in her presence.

Back to the shoot… I had wanted to do something a little different, but I didn’t have anything specific in mind, so I told Karen I was happy do urban-ish with a graffiti wall, or a location with a country or woodlands feel with long grass. And my business partner on The Bride’s Tree was also getting shots done the same day, and she really wanted the beach. The compromise? All of the above!

Karen was amazing in finding a location very nearby to Twin Waters North Shore beach to get both our long grass shots and the graffiti wall, which was sneakily tucked away around the corner. See, all the best photographers know all the best spots in the area, having scoped it all out ahead of time. I completely expected to have to choose one or the other, so I was thoroughly impressed when we got to do everything we wanted!

I put together two very different styles for Jonah and I for our shoot. I knew the first outfit needed to fit both a “woodlands” feel and the funky grafitti vibe, so I chose denim and black with a touch of colour that spoke to our individual styles. Jonah is a very funky kid. He likes to look, as he puts it, “stylish.” He loves a collared shirt, which he believes is the height of sophistication.

We really had a lot of fun at the shoot. Karen definitely captured the true “us.”

For my makeup, I applied an overall look I know works for me. I wanted a soft matte brown smokey eye with plenty of definition to draw focus. I'm a big fan of brows, so they have been defined in my natural dark colour. For my lips, I went with a deep berry stain, and finally I did a heavy contour and some colour on my cheeks. I like makeup (surprise!), and find that a not-too-heavy, but clearly "made up" look suits me. I definitely pulled out all the stops for my family portraits, as I will have these photos forever

I adore my Cat Hammil necklaces from Willow and Bird in Cotton Tree. They have sweet quotes on them. In this shoot I'm wearing two from a set of three

Jonah wears a Big W checked shirt, Pumpkin Patch denim shirt, Big W black skinny jeans, Kustom sneakers, a Destiny Rescue leather wrist band with cross and an ANZAC poppy pin

I curled my hair with my trusty conicle, ensuring I made the most of being able to direct my hair in different angles to create volume. I added even more volume by dusting some volumising powder in and doing some strategic backcombing

I'm wearing my all-time fave top from Portmans, Levi Jeans, Windsor Smith sandals, Cotton On leather wrist bands and Cat Hammil necklaces

Our funky footwear brough in a bit of colour to our black and denim get ups. Jonah wears his red Kustom sneakers. I'm wearing my fave Windsor Smith sandals

Jonah's cute straw hat with blue band is from Myer

My Revue dress was a real find. It matched my boy's gear perfectly, and I was able to wear it to a dear friend's country wedding a few weeks later! My earrings are old favourites, and I cannot recall where they were found. They are a cameo style in a super pretty duck egg blue, white and silver design

I love Country Road's children's clothing! I find myself in there more than I care to admit... Jonah's shirt, tee and shorts are all Country Road

We took along a couple of props to our shoot. This ship we found in Loot, Jonah fell in love with it, and it now takes pride of place in our living room

When having your family portraits taken, be sure to choose clothes you love, and that work in with the rest of the family, as well as the location. This part I can’t stress strongly enough – have a professional hair and makeup artist hussy you up for the occasion! You will have these photos forever, they are a moment in time you are taking the time to capture with a professional photographer, so you want to do it right. If you are local to the Sunshine Coast, take a look at my special mid-week portrait shoot prices. If I wasn’t in the biz myself, I absolutely would have hired someone else to make sure I looked as amazing as I possibly could for our shoot. I mean, having Karen Buckle shoot my family portraits is by far the most special occasion ever!
