M A R R I E D | Elise + Tony

AWatson_151016_9479copy
Not long ago now, I had a little wander up the range to Flaxton Farmhouse for Elise and Tony’s classic, elegant Sunshine Coast hinterland wedding to spend the morning being makeup artist for the beautiful bride, her two bridesmaids, junior bridesmaid, and mothers of the bride and groom.

I absolutely loved the stylish dresses Elise chose for her bridesmaids, which perfectly suited the style and location and looked equally as appropriate and lovely on the maid of honour as it did on her sweet junior bridesmaid.

In keeping with Elise’s classic wedding look, we went for a makeup design using only matte eyeshadows, and it was designed entirely to complement Elise’s facial features, her milky skin and ebony hair.

Speaking of her hair, this elegant style was created by Kirsty from Evalyn Parsons Hair. I love working with fabulous hair stylists, who I know bring it every single time. Every day. Every dang day.

These beautiful images are by the lovely, talented Adriana Watson Photography, who is also always a pleasure to work with and was kind enough to send me these images to share with you!

Daisy + Matt Got Married

Sunshine Coast Wedding Photographer Matt Rowe-85

It was my absolute pleasure to make up gorgeous bride, Daisy, for her Maroochydore wedding to longtime love, Matt. Daisy is a natural beauty and wanted to keep her wedding day look lovely and classic and understated. We focused on warm neutral tones to add definition to the eyes, lots of lashes, and the perfect pink-brown nude lipstick.

Daisy, her three bridesmaids and daughter Danica (junior bridesmaid) got ready at The Duporth Riverside Resort before heading just downstairs for their wedding at Ebb Waterfront Restaurant.

The very talented Matt Rowe Photography was kind enough to share these images from the day with me. As a Sunshine Coast makeup artist, working with fantastic photographers like Matt is a dream!

A hot tip for anybody getting married in or close by to Maroochydore – the apartments at The Duporth Riverside Resort are up there in my absolute fave places for a wedding morning getting ready spot. They are all beautifully decorated, have a stunning waterfront view, and they are nice and spacious, which is exactly what you need when you have lots of people in one space getting hair and makeup done, flowers arriving, well-wishers popping in, and all that exciting stuff!

Sunshine Coast Wedding Photographer Matt Rowe-59

For the bridesmaids, Daisy wanted to work her fave colour into the mix, so we went for a striking aqua blue foiled eyeshadow detail.

The bride’s beautiful daughter, Danica, was an absolute vision in her blue lace dress as junior bridesmaid. Being only 13 years old, of course we kept the makeup on the lighter side, simply evening out the skin tone and adding some subtle definition to the eyes, a little cheek colour and lip gloss. Perfect for a young teen. And what about that gorgeous head of hair! Lush!

Vieille Branche wedding shoot featured on White Magazine blog

DebBoots-VieilleBranche-0216

It is a great honour to be featured on White Magazine’s blog with this shoot, which I was thrilled to be invited to be a part of. Vieille Branche has to be one of my very favourite new-old wedding venues. It is tucked away like a little treasure in Brisbane, housing antiquities and great lighting.

Hannah was an absolutely stunning model, and a true delight to work with. I gave her some romantic waves and swept some tresses back into twisted braids, and pinned in some sweet little flowers and leaves.

For her makeup, I wanted to allow Hannah’s natural beauty shine with a classic look. The deep red lip suited her complexion perfectly.

I must send out a huge thanks to photographer Deb Boots Love Stories for inviting me to be part of this shoot. I knew on the day it was going to be something really special, but the photos have exceeded the very high expectations I had. I just love it with all my little heart.

And thank you to the whole team, who made me feel very welcome and did such an incredible job pulling this shoot together.

My New Profile Pics

Sally Townsend MUA_1

The lovely Miss Terri Hanlon recently popped into my place to snap a few pics of me working at home for my website, and also my new Editor’s pic for The Bride’s Tree Magazine.

It’s always a disconcerting experience being on the other side of the lens, as opposed to behind-the-scenes wielding a pressed powder and mean brush belt fussing over models in my role as a makeup artist. This time all the nerves were forgotten when the calming presence of Terri appeared. It was all so easy peasy, because Terri makes it impossible not to be at home as her camera’s subject.

Of course my constant companion and creative director, Mr Darcy the Lhasa-poo, was on hand to give some much-needed posing advice and plenty of cuddles. I was happy with this arrangement at the time, but now I’ve seen the images, it’s clear I’ve been upstaged. Hmph. Sally Townsend MUA _ Terri Hanlon Photography

Oh Mr Darcy, you are a dark and handsome (not so tall…) dashing prince! This smoochy pooch is never far, choosing to spend his days happily sprawled under my desk, or cuddled up on the couch or in my bed with me – wherever my home office happens to be on any given day.

Terri Hanlon PhotographyThis is my official Editor’s Letter pic, which will now appear in each issue of The Bride’s Tree free online bridal magazine.

Terri Hanlon Photography Terri Hanlon Photography

Terri Hanlon PhotographyFor my closeup, I chose to wear a fairly natural makeup with a hint of glam. I’m sporting my absolute favourite lipstick by MAC Cosmetics – a lustre shade called Syrup. And of course perfectly defined eyebrows.

When styling my hair, I employed my signature style – messy. My hair is naturally wavy, so I tend to achieve “the messy look” quite easily by blowdrying my hair upside down for volume, then when it’s almost dry, I tie it in a bun for 10 minutes or so. Imperfect, yet effective! Terri Hanlon Photography

There’s that pretty pup again, offering his congratulations on my latest blog article. Why thank you, Mr Darcy!Terri Hanlon Photography

Wedding Celebration by the Seaside

Caloundra Makeup Artist_Sally Townsend Makeup Artistry_Stacey Schramm Photography5

I absolutely love it when I get the chance to break all the rules and be creative as a wedding makeup artist. When I was asked to be part of a fun wedding inspiration shoot in seaside Caloundra with a celebratory feel, I couldn’t resist. The lovely couple were real-life husband and wife, Tegan and Tariq.

Since “fun” was the order of the day, and I had the prettiest of flowers – not to mention, the prettiest of brides – to work with, a bright pink lip it was! Perfect for Sunshine Coast wedding makeup. And for something a little different, I went with some grey-brown toned depth for definition, and pink-gold shimmer to bring out the eyes. In a twist on the glam eyeliner flick, I used a gorgeous metallic golden brown to soften the striking look.

The team was a good’un. I absolutely adore working with Nicole from Sass & Niki’s Wedding Hair, not only because she does beautiful hair stylin’, but the lady herself is stylin’ too, and she has an awesome personality to boot. For this shoot, Nicole went for a soft relaxed style wispy curls and interesting details. I love the little braid snuck into the back.

I’ve been very very fortunate to work with Lauren from Magnolia Grove Flowers a few times now. This flower crown was so sweet, it almost gave me a toothache. Wouldn’t you agree!

The one wedding pro I hadn’t yet worked with was Stacey Schramm Photography. Stacey organised this whole affair, and I’m so pleased she found me to be part of it. What a delightful person, and fantastic photographer.

Sirens by the Seaside for The Bride’s Tree Magazine Part 1

Terri Hanlon Photography

You know those rare nights when you spontaneously gather your gal pals and head out for a night on the town and although you have zero expectations, it turns out to be what you will always refer to as, “one of the best night EVER!” Well that’s how I feel about this photo shoot.

A few months ago I was feeling the need to get creative with my makeup and styling. I contacted a few Sunshine Coast wedding industry pals and in a matter of a few days, we threw together a shoot that has easily become one of my most favourite yet.

The way this came together so seamlessly and was so relaxed and such fun will always make it special to me. I love the simplicity of this shoot with minimal styling, allowing the gorgeous models, fashion and location to steal the show. I always love working at Shelly Beach in Caloundra, which is never overrun with people and always has perfect afternoon light.

These photos were shot by the wonderfully talented Terri Hanlon Photography.

Terri Hanlon PhotographyBrooke is stunning with a natural flushed look. I gave her “just-had-sex” cheeks and “my-colour-but-better” lips with one of my fave stains by Benefit.

Sirens Collage _ Caloundra Makuep artist 14I love this true white striking wedding dress by Judy Copley Couture. All the girls wear dresses by Judy.

Terri Hanlon Photography

Sirens collage _ Caloundra makeup artist10I asked Magnolia Grove to create a bouquet with fluffy textures and colours that would complement, and not compete with, the natural beach elements by using sandy tones.

I also asked for very robust floral s to adorn the feet. The flower anklets they created in similar, but varying tones of peach, white, and yellow were perfection. If only they lasted forever!
Terri Hanlon PhotographyTerri Hanlon PhotographyLauren is already a bronzed beauty, so I upped the ante and gave her some gorgeous gold and bronze-toned makeup with nude lips. This made her blue eyes pop.

I gave Kirra a soft and pretty bridal makeup design with peach and champagne tones. Sirens collage _ Caloundra makeup artist13

My makeup designs are only as good as the hair styling surrounding them. I always love working with Nicole from Sass & Niki’s Wedding Hair, because she not only does a spectacular job, she is such a great person to have around. Adore her!

Cosmetics Haul: The Body Shop + Priceline

Body Shop + Priceline HaulI did a spot o’ shopping on the weekend, and I picked up some great buys from Priceline and The Body Shop for my own personal use.

First, I went to The Body Shop because I specifically wanted to buy their mascara with bees wax in the ingredients. The last mascara purchase I made was one of my faves – Covergirl LashBlast – but I accidentally got the waterproof version *insert devastated emoji face*. I have been feeling like I have strands of straw stuck to my eyes and cursing myself every night when taking off my mascara as it pandas up my eyes good and proper.

The wonderful thing about this mascara from The Body Shop is that it actually conditions your eyelashes and makes them super soft. I know, it’s not something you really think you need – soft lashes? Huh? Trust me, once you have them, you will get it. So… Ihave a bad feeling the assistant sold me one that does not have the bees wax, which is the one component I really wanted… but I’m going to try it and find out.  I have here the Super Volume Mascara. Body Shop products + lipstick swatch

While I was at The Body Shop I picked up one of my all-time faves, their Milk Bath. So luxurious, I love it, and so does my son. He whinges at me whenever I add himilayan bath salts to his bath (“They’re scratchy!”), so I know he will be excited to see the Milk Bath back in the house, because it has the exact opposite effect. If you have not felt it before, go in store and they will put some in a bowl for you. It actually softens the water. I kid you not. Look, you’ll see. Seriously, you gotta do it.

I also happened to notice The Body Shop have introduced an All-in-One BB Cream to their line! I was wearing makeup, so I tried it on my hand and it dried really soft and matte. It looks like it will be great coverage. As a busy business owner/soccer mum, I am big time into BB Cream. It’s so fast and easy and doesn’t damage your skin. It’s great for anyone, who has little time for makeup day-to-day, but just want an even skin tone and a little pick-me-up.

They also had a clearance section, so I grabbed this awesome lipstick that I’ve swatched above. It is #301 in their Colour Crush range. I think it’s on clearance because it’s being discontinued, but it’s an awesome colour if you can find it. It’s a really shimmery cocoa brown with a very ashy tone and feels beautiful. I know it will look amazing on someone, so it’s going in the kit. It was only $10, can’t go past it!

Now here’s some SUPER EXCITING NEWS… The Body Shop have LOWERED their prices in Australia. Yes, that’s right, one brand is finally doing right by us, recognising that we just plain can’t afford to pay around 200%+ more than the rest of the world, and have lowered their prices permanently! Thanks Body Shop, love your work!

Rimmel London free gift with purchase Priceline

Rimmel London Lip Liner + Lasting Finish Colour Rush

Onto Priceline, I headed straight to the Rimmel London section. I rate Rimmel, I think they have great products and they are priced well. At least, for Australia, they are pretty decent prices. I planned to grab a couple of lip liners and try one of their chubby sticks, but the assistant let me know they were offering a fabulous gift with purchase at the moment. If you spend $20, you receive one of two gift sets with three products – a Provocalips gloss duo, which I had planned to try anyway, a Scandaleyes mascara and a nail polish. You can see the colours above.

I always shop bargains at Priceline, because they do genuinely offer great deals. The trick is to not get sucked into buying something to get something free if you wouldn’t want that product anyway.

Because I had several products to buy, I purchased in two separate transactions, so I could take advantage of the offer twice. Cheeky, no?

Pictured above are swatches of the two lip liners I purchased – Exaggerate Full Colour Lip Liner in 018 Addiction and 063 Eastend Snob. On the right is my new Colour Rush chubby stick in 710 Drive Me Nude. These products can’t be sharpened, so they are only for my personal use. I also picked up a Scandaleyes waterproof Kohl Kajal in 005 Nude.

Rimmel London gift with purchase

On the left are swatches of the two different Provocalips shades found in each gift pack. On top is 210 Little Minx and underneath is 500 Kiss Me You Fool. These mascara wands on the Rimmel London Scandaleyes Mascaras look awesome!

Kate Rimmel London

Now probably the product I’m most excited by is this absolutely stunning, highly pigmented red matte lipstick from the Rimmel London Kate Moss collection. I love the cute packaging (well, once I remove the hideous bar code!), and the feel and colour intensity of this lipstick is divine. I cannot wait to try this!

A very successful makeup shopping expedition in my book!

Haul, Recommended Products

Makeup Haul: Makeup Geek Eyeshadows

Makeup Geek eyeshadowsMy friends, this haul was one of my most exciting cosmetic purchases of all time. It’s not just the kind of product, or the quality of the product, but the usability and the value that make me so thrilled this product line even exists.

Makeup Geek is the brainchild of You Tube sensation, Marlena, also known as Makeup Geek. She has created a makeup brand that not only boasts equality, or arguably even superiority, to MAC Cosmetics, but it is so affordable.

As a makeup artist, I spend a small fortune keeping my makeup kit stocked full of high end products of the highest quality. It’s really rare to find a brand that keeps the quality high and the prices low. Makeup Geek eyeshadows are priced at $US5.99 (today AUD$7.67.) The equivalent product from MAC Cosmetics in Australia will set you back AUD$33.00. Yikes!

The 27 beautiful eyeshadows I chose cost me $202.05. The MAC Cosmetics equivalent would have cost me $891.00!

‘Nuff said. But let’s say some more, anyway…

Makeup Geek delivery packagingThis is how my products arrived. They are packaged exactly the same as MAC Cosmetics eyeshadow pans, nice and safe. They were also bundled and bubble wrapped and topped with those fun little puffs to fill the box; nothing was damaging these suckers!

It was positively agonising to wait almost 3 weeks for my delivery! The delivery itself cost me AUD$23.39. It was quite sweet to also receive a hand-written note from the lovely lass, who packaged my products.

I must credit my Mum for first telling me about Makeup Geek after watching Marlena’s video. Then I went into research mode, searching online, watching countless You Tube videos, finally I concurred they were worth a try. Never to do things by halves, I ordered a Z Palette (which at US$20 is also much cheaper than any we can source in Australia), and as many Makeup Geek eyeshadow pans that could fit in a large Z Palette, which turned out to be 27.

From watching the You Tube videos from beauty vloggers I really trust, I knew I would be happy with the purchase and I just didn’t see the sense in waiting for weeks for my order only to want to order more immediately and wasting the postage. Even though that’s exactly what happened anyway! I want more already!

Makeup Geek Starter KitYou may have done the calculations and figured out that AUD$7.67 x 27 actually equals $207.09. You see, I made another little saving by purchasing my first nine shades in the Makeup Geek Starter Kit, which cost US$49.99 (AUD$63.99.) The nine shades pictured above are:

Creme Brûlée, Cocoa Bear, Unexpected

Shimma Shimma, Mocha, Prom Night

Glamorous, Corrupt, Drama Queen

There are 64 eyeshadow shades available in the Makeup Geek range, so to choose just 27 I also looked to my fave makeup guru You Tubers for advice. The nine shades in the starter kit were in every single video I watched, and the ones below were in many of them, too, and they were also the shades I believed I would watch the most.

Beaches and Cream, Burlesque, Cinderella, Cosmopolitan, Cupcake, Frappe, Graphite, Homecoming, Ice Queen, White Lies, Latte, Mango Tango, Mercury, Moondust, Peach Smoothie, Pop Culture, Taupe Notch, Vanilla Bean.

A lot of these shades are neutrals, and I chose a lot of what I knew would be great transition colours. I also threw in a few fun colours. I took into account my existing kit and what I know my clients, being primarily brides, ask for. Sunshine Coast and Brisbane brides are not typically wanting an overly made up glamour look, but more of a subtle beautification of their already pretty fresh faces.

(By the way, these shadows are really really soft and creamy, so you have to be careful not to slip and dig your nail in, like I did with my Prom Night… boo hoo!)

Z Palette Makeup Geek

Z Palettes are brilliant. They are strongly magnetised, so you can safely store any of your makeup pans conveniently, and they have a see-through lid, so you can always see your products. This is very time-saving for me as a makeup artist.

Let’s address something important.

We all know by now that prices of makeup, and cosmetics in general, in Australia are ridiculous. For whatever reason, we are being completely taken for a ride when it comes to this particular industry.

Why exactly? It cannot be simply postage… it really does not cost all that much to ship from the US and UK, where most of our fave brands hail from. It does, however, cost an exorbitant amount in import taxes – in many cases more than the original product price. There is also the consideration that in Australia our minimum wage is a lot higher than in the US, so it actually costs a lot more for our retailers to run their stores. That part is a good thing, in the grand scheme of things.

Bottom line is, buying makeup in Australia is not affordable. Products that cost $5 in the US are being charged at $30 in Australia. Unbelievable! It’s no wonder we all buy online or beg our travelling friends to make purchases for us!

Sally Townsend _ Makeup Geek look

Disclaimer: First, my brows are shockingly unattended to in this pic, sorry! Second, I have a horrible blemish I was silly enough to mess with on my nose… it’s all scabby and gross -what’s a girl to do? 🙁

So, I’m sure you’re wondering, do they in fact match up to MAC eyeshadows? I can unequivocally say yes, yes they do. I have a close friend who worked for MAC and has a huge collection. I compared them by swatching the colours on my hands, and almost every Makeup Geek out-performed in terms of colour pay off.

I have now played with my new shades a few times, and they wear beautifully. We are just at the end of Summer here in Australia, and if you have ever been to the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, you will know the turn of season means nothing. It is scorching hot and humid. Today I shopped all day and my Makeup Geek eye makeup is still perfect.

In conclusion: I love Makeup Geek! I think I might give the blushes a try next… Stay tuned!

My Fave Makeup You Tube Channels

Gals, I’ve been wasting a lot o’ time lately getting my You Tube on. Nope, no I have not being doing anything so productive as creating makeup tutorial videos… I have simply been watching ’em.

It all started like this. I wanted to buy some new brushes, a new trolley case for all my freelance makeup artist gear, and various new products. These I will be blogging about, so stay tuned!

Nobody wants to part with money and feel like it’s been wasted, so I went to my gurus and started to search on You Tube very specific things I wanted to know about, such as must-have brushes, top 10 products from specific lines etc. I found that extremely useful in making my purchase choices.

And in doing so, I also found a whole stack of beauty bloggers I haven’t come across before. So, as I have done in the past, I thought I would share my fave makeup You Tube films and channels with you, because these beauty gurus are in-the -know product-wise, they are fun with their makeup and they have great personality.

Heidi Hamoud

I cannot stop looking at this pretty face! I really like Heidi a lot. She has a gorgeous Instagram account, she is a freelance makeup artist, who was self-taught, and she does some really creative looks using mostly high end products. I also enjoy her Aussie accent, which, like mine, is a little rough around the edges at times!

This video is a lovely tutorial with a beautiful look and it’s only short, so spend the four odd minutes and do yourself a favour.

KathleenLights

Love this little Latina babe! She’s so cute and funny, and I like how honest she is about the products. She’s down to earth and uses as many cheaper brands as she does expensive ones.

In this video, she shares her IMATS haul, and although I’m super jealous, I just love seeing new cosmetics! I’m a bit obsessed.

Lauren Curtis

Another Aussie lass, hurrah! I very much enjoy the whole look of Lauren’s videos from her pretty pretty face to her gorgeous white apartment in the background. I also love her honesty and she’s not afraid to criticise products, no matter whether they are drug store or high end.

This video is useful for anyone looking for a new foundation as everything here is available in Australia, which is not always the case with You Tubers, who are more often located in the UK or US.

Makeup Geek

Ah, Marlena. A real veteran of You Tube in the beauty arena. She has taken her success as a You Tuber and following to help her start her own brand named after her channel, Makeup Geek. Her eyeshadows are fabulous dupes of MAC eyeshadown. And… I have order TWENTY-SEVEN of them! I cannot wait to receive them. I’m actually becoming really impatient, because it’s been a couple of weeks since I ordered them… this is what we get for living in the

gossmakeupartist

Now this guy I’ve loved for a long time. I love everything about him. He is an amazing makeup artist, he is a no bullshit (excuse my language!) approach, and I love how he keeps his videos short and precise. You always have time for his videos, and don’t get halfway through and start wondering when it’s going to end, like with some!

The subject of this video is a makeup technique many people ask me about. I actually love what has become widely known as the Kim Kardashian technique; I apply it on myself for a night out and some clients; I’ve always loved doing a cream or liquid contour and highlight. It was happening long before Kim Kardashian, but girlfriend definitely takes it to a whole new level! I quite love it.

I hope you enjoyed some of these films. If you would like to share your faves with me, I would love that!
