Autumn Boho Bridal Makeup for The Bride’s Tree Magazine

MOFFAT BEACH TBT THP-21646

It’s always fun to try new looks, and when I recently worked on The Bride’s Tree Magazine‘s Autumn Beauty Shoot, it was all about creating a seasonal-inspired bridal makeup look.

For my gorgeous model, Mahlia, I used a lovely orange hue on her lips, and created a gentle cut crease in Autumnal warm tones with a sandy base on the lid. The trick to making this look so fresh is by bringing my A-game when it comes to the skin. Techniques I developed for this look involve creating a flawless base while maintaining radiance and of course #highlightonfleek.

The look was loosely bohemian, so with hair like Mahlia’s that only meant one thing: wild flowing curls, and in a creative twist only Evalyn Parsons could dream up, a double halo of fishtail braids. Add in some downright floral crown perfection by Magnolia Grove, and you’ve got yourself a bohemian bridal look, my friends.

We took all our Autumn bridal prettiness down to one of my absolute favourite beach locations here on the Sunshine Coast, Caloundra’s Moffat Beach to get these beautiful images, shot by Terri Hanlon.

We’re in Cosmo Bride!

Screen Shot 2016-06-12 at 4.55.27 pm

Well this was a pretty exciting discovery when we learned a beautiful wedding we worked on made it into the latest edition of Australian Cosmo Bride! And not only is it one of the featured real weddings – it is the lead feature article for this edition!

Sally and Kirra were the makeup artists commissioned to look after the bridesmaids and mother-of-the-bride for Amber and Michael’s Noosa wedding, while the bride had a friend do her makeup.

There was something extra special about this wedding – the bride happens to be the daughter of bespoke bridal couture designer, Judy Copley, who is genuinely one of the world’s loveliest ladies, (a trait she has generously passed on to her beautiful daughter.) It was such a pleasure to be part of Amber’s wedding day morning, which was full of love and laughter and a general sense of gratitude for life, love, the day that lay ahead and for all the people involved.

Make sure you pick up the latest edition of Cosmo Bride to learn more about Amber and Michael’s gorgeous wedding.

STMA on The Metropolist’s Best MUA List

Makeup Artists.Screen Shot 2016-06-12 at 4.25.51 pmI was cool as a cucumber when I was recently named by The Metropolist (my latest daily must-read blog) as one of the Sunshine Coast’s 6 Best Makeup Artists. Well, sure if you call jumping up and down, squealing with glee “cool.” Maybe in some cultures it is, I’m just saying.

But seriously, what an honour to be named amongst some of the MUAs I admire most, (and agree are among the best makeup artists on the Sunshine Coast!)

Quite chuffed indeed.

The Sexy Retro Chic Look

makeup Look Book _ sexy retro chic makeup design

When I recently gave my website an extreme makeover, I wanted to create something that would help my gorgeous clients when it came time to figuring out what exactly they would want me, their makeup artist, or indeed one of the amazing makeup artists on my team, to create their own dream look for their wedding or special occasion.

And so the careful planning of not one, but two photo shoots, writing and designing of a makeup Look Book ensued. The book contains some of our most requested makeup looks.

Today I’m sharing with you one of my absolute favourite makeup designs from the first shoot we put together. We call it our Sexy Retro Chic look, which is really the classic look made popular in the 1950’s. There are a few key elements to achieve authenticity with this look, and create an undeniably feminine, super sexy style.

  1. Flawless matte finish foundation.
  2. Perfectly defined brows, not too thin and with a beautiful arch.
  3. A soft flush of colour on the cheeks.
  4. Bold winged eyeliner applied with absolute precision.
  5. Beautiful red lips – either matte or glossy.

From movie stars to pin-up babes, and today’s classic chic lasses, the bold red lip teamed with a clean winged liner suits absolutely everyone. STMA team member Hannah worked her makeup magic on model, Tamika, while Rosie gave her glossy locks some curls.

Perfect brows are an absolute must for this look. They frame the face and balance out the strong red lip. A soft cut crease gives dimension to the eye.

Ladies with any eye colour can pull off this classic look. The orange-based red lip on Tamika is particularly effective in bringing out her bright blue eyes. All the definition is on top of the eye for this look, which creates sexy fluttering eyes.

STMA at the Sunshine Coast Bridal Showcase

Chelsea_Bridal Makeup_ Sunshine Coast bridal showcase_Sally Townsend Makeup Artistry1

A couple of weekends ago, my makeup team exhibited at the Sunshine Coast Bridal Showcase at Novotel Twin Waters Resort. We met tons of gorgeous brides, as the whole room was packed in like a sardine can. Let me tell you, it actually got quite hot in there!

Take a peek at the pics the wonderful wedding photographer, Terri Hanlon, was kind enough to take for me on the day.

_TH11262

Isn’t my stand just the prettiest?! Chelsea from Simply Style Co. designed and set up my stand for me, and it was just perfect – totally me!

_TH11259

This is me, hanging out at my pretty stand.

_TH11250

I was joined by my girl, Kirra, who is one of my gorgeous makeup artists on my team, and always such a good sport to help out on bridal expo days talking to brides and telling them all about what we offer.

Chelsea_Bridal Makeup_ Sunshine Coast bridal showcase_Sally Townsend Makeup Artistry3

Kirra also acted as a live example of my work, along with this pretty little thing, Chelsea. I spent the morning making up the gals to look like my bridal makeup clients on the morning of their wedding, working in partnership with Nicole from Sass & Niki’s Wedding Hair. We always see the brides before the dress goes on in cute little robes, so we dressed Kirra and Chelsea in comfort for the day to give the feel of what a morning with us on your wedding day will really be like!

Kirra wears a stunning hair piece by Shut the Front Door, and Chelsea’s floral crown of fresh flowers is by The Orange Blossom. Both girls wear Peter Alexander robes.

I gave Kirra a classic bridal look with a clean natural eye makeup and gorgeous slick flick. Finished off with peachy cheeks and a sweet rosebud pout.

Chelsea’s blue eyes screamed at me to shimmer them up with a soft smokey eye and cheeky matte pink lip.

MARRIED | Larissa + Dane

Lake_Weyba_Sunshine_Coast_Wedding_Photography_Playback_Studios_Larissa_Dane-1

Pretty as a picture, lovely bride Larissa married her one true love, Dane, at Lake MacDonald back in September last year. (Side note: does anyone else feel like it was a major downhill slide into 2016 in that last quarter?!)

I had my girls, Kirra and Hannah, looking after Larissa’s bridal makeup for her wedding day, plus her five bridesmaids, mother and mother-in-law.  I feel like a super proud big sis when I see the amazing results my girls turn out time and time again.

I particularly love how Larissa’s eyes are defined, yet natural, with a wash of shimmer, and her mauve lips match her flowers perfectly.

Alongside Kirra on makeup, working on Larissa’s hair, was one of my all-time faves, Nicole from Sass & Niki’s Wedding Hair. Can we all just take a moment to appreciate Larissa’s ah-may-singly pretty hair colour, which looks completely dreamy in this side-swept loose and textured style.

Playback Studios took these images of Larissa and Dane’s Lake MacDonald wedding and were kind enough to share them with us.

Remember brides, I have a wedding makeup special running for the month of January. If you’re getting married this year, make sure you check it out.

Holiday Gift Guide 2015

Screen Shot 2015-12-08 at 6.58.21 pm

Aside from Carols by Candlelight, my favourite thing about Christmas is finding gifts for all my loved ones. I love to give a great gift, and I love to receive one, of course!

While I don’t think it’s about the amount of money you spend, I do believe well thought-out quality pieces are so nice to give – and receive.

I’ve put together a selection of some items I think would make perfect gifts. Most of them are not terribly expensive, and all of them are destined to be adored this Holiday Season.

I’ve included links to where I have successfully purchased these or other items.
Charlotte Tilbury Film Star Bronze + Glow

This is EVERYTHING. Hands-down my most delightful product purchase of the year. It makes me happy every time I use it, and I defy you to find a lucky lady, who would not be blown over by this gift. Charlotte Tilbury Film Star Bronze & Glow, $97

Charlotte Tilbury The Ingenue pack

There are a bunch of looks-in-a-bag from Charlotte Tilbury, which is a line designed by the celebrity makeup artist specifically to make makeupping simple for the everyday gal. This one, The Ingenue, allows you to create a really sweet fresh look, ideal for summer. Charlotte Tilbury The Ingenue, $300  clarisonic-keith-haring

I kid you not, I have so far at least halved the size of my pores with my new Clarisonic Mia 2 after precisely five uses (at time of publishing this post.) I will definitely be dedicating an entire blog post to this little gem soon, but in the meantime this would make an incredible gift. I actually gifted this to myself as an early Christmas present (cheeky). Clarisonic Mia 2, From $171 FREE SHIPPING Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder trio

Just a gorgeous luxury palette any makeup lover would kill for. Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette, $72

How I choose products for my pro makeup kit

About Sally the Makeup Artist_Julian BeattieWhen clients ask me which brands I use, it’s a really really long answer, because I am not a makeup artist, who sticks to one brand and I am introducing new products to my kit all the time. Seriously, on a weekly basis.

I certainly have some tried and tested longtime favourites, however as to which brands I use, this ever-evolving, because the beauty industry is constantly coming up with new technologies and applying them to new products. I love that there are always improvements in the products available to consumers and professionals.

I could really write about this all day, but I’m going to contain myself and simply take you through the process I have for introducing new products to my professional makeup kit. Let’s do this thing.

Recommendations

I spend what some might call an obscene amount of money on makeup and beauty products, so I don’t typically make impulse purchases. I will always make considered choices based on recommendations from trusted sources. Sometimes this is one of my amazing makeup artist colleagues or friends (I have been known to unashamedly go foraging through other MUAs kits!) or one of my fave beauty YouTubers.

Typically I will go in search of a particular product that is on my radar. If I want to try more than one product from a line, I will search for and pour over YouTube Top 10 videos about a particular brand and make lists of the products that pop up multiple times from different sources. One of the reasons I do this is to save on postage and simply to ensure I’m trying out new products regularly to stay on top of my game.

Ethics

I made the choice a little while ago to refrain from purchasing any products, which are tested on animals, or which work within or in association with a parent company  that tests on animals. This is not an easy feat, because the big beauty companies are very stealthy with the way they can basically hide the fact that they test on animals. If I’m ever unsure about a company or brand, I will use the PETA search for cruelty-free companies tool.

Full disclosure: I do still have some products in my kit at present, which have come from companies that test on animals, because I’m not going to waste hundreds of dollars worth of makeup. I simply won’t purchase these products again once they have run out. The big one in my kit, which I need to find alternatives for, are my MAC Cosmetics products. It’s sad for me to say goodbye to this brand, but not nearly as sad as imagining the poor animals that suffer to create their (admittedly excellent) products. I’ve found so many fantastic alternatives to MAC, which are just as good and in some cases even better, so that’s the good news!

Guinea Pig Me

When I receive a new product, before it makes it anywhere near my pro kit, it hangs out with me in my bathroom for a short while so I can test it out on myself. This allows me to figure out how it wears throughout the day and night, to what degree it emulsifies on the skin, how it blends, and just basically whether or not it does what it says it does.

I am a fantastic guinea pig, because for makeup to stay put on my combination oily skin in the Queensland climate I happen to reside in, is pretty impressive. For example, I will try new foundations with a few different kinds of primers and setting powders, for eyeshadows I want to practice a bunch of different looks as well, and as I don’t wear makeup every single day, this can mean a few weeks or months of testing.

Further Testing + Second Opinion

Of course combination oily is not the only skin type out there, and I need to ensure I’m equipped with products, which will work for all skin types. So I want to give all my products a good try on someone who has a different skin type to mine. Because I do a lot of photo shoot collaborations, I might try out a foundation or a new eyeshadow look, highlight, blush or any kind of product, on a model for a shoot. I do this because typically the makeup only needs to last a couple of hours anyway, and I am on hand to do any touch ups regardless if it’s not wearing as well as I had hoped. If all is going well, I will later ask the model for feedback on how the makeup continued to wear after the shoot, and the best thing is I get to see how the makeup turns out in professional photos.

The other people I will ask for opinions are my sisters and friends. I will try out a look on them, or I will lend them a product for a few days to get their honest opinion.

Some Products That Have Recently Made the Cut

New Kit Products

It’s always exciting when I have new products I have been trying out that have managed to impress me enough to get a promotion from bathroom product to pro kit product! I’ll be honest, some of them I decide I’ll miss too much, so I’ll buy myself my own to keep. Shh…

Below are some products, which have passed my rigorous testing phase and just recently gone pro.

The Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette is a new holy grail product for me. I absolutely cannot get enough of this product both on myself and clients.

The Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer is indeed as amazing as Jaclyn Hill claims, and I am about to purchase a whole array of these in many colours for my kit.

I have LOVED Harlotte’s collection of nude lipsticks for a long time, however their new bright range has a shade called Temptress, which I am now in love with. As you can see, I have used a fair amount of this lipstick already and I feel a backup order coming on! Another super exciting purchase was Harlotte’s Smokey Eye Palettes. I was very very impressed with the creamy texture and intense colour pay off from these eyeshadows. They are highly pigmented and blend beautifully.

Too Faced is another brand, which I have purchased a number of new products from. Most recently I have been trying their Primed and Poreless Pure Oil-Free Primer… and yes I did just purchase two more to ensure I always have enough on hand both in my pro kit and in my bathroom. This product really agrees with my skin – hooray!

I put off purchasing from Skindinavia for a little while, because it’s a really expensive product, and you can only purchase these overseas from the brand’s own website. I knew I would want them both for myself and my kit if I was going to go to all the effort of making an international purchase… but these Makeup Primer Sprays and Finishing Spray were so worth it. I took a chance and ordered four straight up – two for me, two for the kit, because I didn’t want to pay postage twice when I got it and inevitably wanted more, and I was not wrong in my decision.

So that’s how I make my choices for my pro kit!

Oh, you’re too kind!

One last thing – I was recently identified as being one of the Top 50 beauty bloggers in Australia! What an honour!
