#MUMLIFE RAW TAG | 11 Questions About My Mum Life

Good day to you, readers. So I’ve made the decision to use this blog as an enjoyable little creative outlet and personal project for myself, as well as a way to communicate things that are important to me. Of course I will continue to show you my makeup work, as well as share useful product information.

I am planning to really up my game with my blogging as well, so I hope you will stick with me. Be sure to let me know what you like to read about, what you don’t enjoy and what you’d love to see that I’m not already sharing with you.

Today is a bit of a fun one, as well as a download. I watch this lovely YouTuber, Elise Sheree, who is an Australian mum to a gorgeous 3-year-old. She has moved with her daughter and husband to London from Sydney, and her videos are mostly about her #mumlife. She came up with this #mumlife RAW Tag, and I thought I would do it today.

In case you don’t know much about me, I’m mum to a football (soccer)-mad lad, Jonah, who is 11.5 years old. He’s my best friend, my surprise-come-dream child, who challenges me every day. He tries so hard in life to be a good person and has big goals in life. He’s a mixed bag, being a super athletic, very much boy’s boy, and also someone who was raised by the girliest girl on the planet. His Dad and I are good friends and – if I say so myself – pretty fantastic co-parents, but we are not in a relationship, so I am Jonah’s primary carer and have been basically his whole life.

I’ll talk about solo parenthood in another post sometime if that’s of interest to anyone, but for today let’s just get into the 11 #mumlife RAW questions… Get ready to get RAW and REAL with me about my life as a parent!

1. Describe your day as a mum today in one word.

Lazy.

2. What’s the most challenging part about connecting with other mums?

To be honest, I’ve always been pretty okay with connecting with other mums, because I just see mums as people I might like to talk to. Two things have sometimes stood in my way… Firstly, some days I revert back to my old shy days, or I simply don’t feel like talking, so maybe I come across as stand-offish.

The other is the fact that I’m a single mum. It really doesn’t have an affect on me in relating to others, but I have felt on occasion that it can make other mums feel uncomfortable in some way… or maybe they just don’t have time for me, because of my lack of husband? Or maybe because they can’t picture double dates and family holidays with just me and my son, I’m not sure. One day I’ll shrug at this, another I might feel a tad down at being overlooked or left out for something I can’t change and I don’t feel lessens my value as a person.

3. Share one horrible poo moment! We’ve all been there.

Mine was when my man cub was just a newborn. I took him out of the bath all lovely and clean, walked into the bedroom holding him to my chest with my hand on his bum, walking towards the mirror, just to admire how gorgeous he was all sweet and clean and nudie. Then… projectile poo, straight through my hand, splattering the mirror!

4. How do you cope with public child meltdowns and tantrums?

I’m a big believer in nipping this kind of thing in the bud, and the way to do that is to have a big consequence that you – and here’s the key – follow through with. So in the past when my man cub was younger, I followed the Supernanny protocol to the letter. I would issue a warning, and if the behaviour continued, he would get a time out or in more serious circumstances, I would pack him in the car and take him home. Then he knew I meant business.

We would have a discussion and I would explain that if this happened the next time, I just would not be able to take him to said park/friend’s house/shop again. He wasn’t one who ever wanted to miss out, so that tended to work. The next time I would lay down the law on the way there and be sure he was aware of my expectations, and I’d have him repeat them back to me, as well as the possible consequence should he play up. I know this sounds extreme, but with a little tear-about boy like mine, it was very necessary!

5. Honestly, how much screen time does your child have?

My man cub knows he’s not to turn on any screens in the morning… but this doesn’t really stop him some days, the cheeky rat! So sometimes I’ll bust him watching YouTube in the morning if he’s up early. Other than this, he will play his iPad with his friends on his way to and from football training when we carpool, which is an hour either way three times a week. He is also allowed some X-box time on the weekend and a little TV time at night if we’re home not too late. On occasion I will restrict his screen time or confiscate his iPad, but that’s usually only if his behaviour is changing for the worse in relation to the screen. Sadly this is a reality – they are not good for kids in big doses. However mostly I don’t actually have to restrict his time too much, because our schedule is so full that there really isn’t opportunity for him to go overboard with electronics. He’s very active with his sport, so it’s not something I worry about too much.

6. What’s your easy go-to dinner that you give at least once a week?

Subway. This is my “healthy version” of takeaway for my man cub, who actually kind of eats two dinners every night (one before and one after football [soccer] training!)

7. Did you yell, cry or struggle today?

Not today! I was a terrible mum and let my son have the day off school due to us both being out till late and being super tired this morning… so we both laid about and watched television, napped and read all day long. It was bliss! I told him to fend for himself when he wanted food, which he is old enough to do now. He did a few little chores throughout the day, and that’s it – no responsibility, no stress. I’m calling it a mental health/catch up on sleep day. I think this is so important to do once-in-a-while, and the key is to fully immerse and do away with any hint of guilt associated with it at all.

8. What was the best moment of the day so far as a mum?

My lad is so incredibly loving, and he will often just stop me in the kitchen for a hug and say things like, “Mummy, I can’t understand how I love you so much!” or “Mummy, you’re the best Mummy in the whole world, I love you!” or “How are you such a pretty Mummy every single day of your whole life?” He’s just the sweetest, and this happened a few times today. I consider myself a very very fortunate mama to have such a loving boy.

9. What is your secret guilty pleasure to reward your mumlife?

Okay, this is hard to admit… I watch Dance Moms! I absolutely love it, and I stream it before it’s out in Australia or watch it on YouTube! I can’t stand Abby Lee Miller, nor most of the mums, and it’s stressful to watch… but I still love it. I can’t explain this in any logical fashion.

10. How often do you experience mum guilt?

I don’t know that I can pinpoint a frequency, but I tend to go through periods where I’m positively wracked with guilt and totally caught up in it and nothing short of distraught. There is no other word for it, and it can really be crippling. It will take over almost every thought and emotion I have, it’s very powerful.

Most of the time I’m pretty happy with the mum I am, and the person I’ve raised, so it’s not overly often. I think we all worry a lot about whether we are doing the right thing by our children… but if we can sit back and say we are striving to do the very best we can, we are putting our children first, and we learn from our mistakes, then we need to give ourselves a break.

11. Share one taboo thing about motherhood you think should be talked about more.

I think there’s a parenthood elitism that’s pretty unsavoury. I’ve noticed among parents there are those who form parental friendships and even foster (or force!) kids’ friendships based on strategy. Basing children’s friendships on what the parents or family can get out of it is pretty gross. I know families who throw themselves at children because of a certain level of affluence or to curry favour to get themselves or their child ahead. They will then shun other families who don’t have as much money or influence, or can’t in some way benefit them.

I think this attitude often comes down to the ambition some parents have for their children and what they hope/expect them to achieve. I think it’s a bit “Keeping up with the Joneses”, which isn’t something I really subscribe to. I deeply disagree with it in fact. I’ve seen a lot of this to be honest, as being a young single parent, I can spot a mile off the people who leave me or my son out because I’m personally not what they would consider of value to their goals for their child.

It’s actually helpful, to be honest, in some ways, because it allows me to easily recognise the people who value our friendship and appreciate our company more than what we could offer them in more superficial terms.

When you’re faced with these instances there are always ways you can choose to react. This kind of upset (and it is truly upsetting sometimes) can make you decide to go low and buy into the circumstance. For example, I could choose to leave a child out of a situation in retaliation… But I don’t agree with that fundamentally, and I have a strong stance of never stooping to a level that others might choose to operate at which I personally cannot reconcile within my own conscience, even if it would be really satisfying to fight fire with fire at times! I could confront the parent, but in certain circles that can only end up working against you… especially if the people in question have the strength in numbers that we don’t have, because we are a two-person family. I am not one to shy away from a confrontation, I’m passionate and frankly, a bit fiery. But I have to ask myself if it’s worth it, because I never want to make my son embarrassed or further disadvantaged. He already is on the back foot in a lot of ways being from a single parent family, so I have to sometimes put my feelings on the back burner in favour of his, and keep the peace. Plus, I actually feel that bigger picture, we have so many more valuable lessons to learn in life that far override such superficiality.

Over the years I’ve really taught myself to come back to some key things to check in with in relation to almost anything to do with his life and development.

  1. Is this more important than kindness? (To which the answer is always no, because nothing is more important than kindness!)
  2. Is this character-building for him, even though it’s hard?
  3. Is this situation developing his empathy skills? (This is super important to me as a parent to give him every opportunity in life to continually develop his empathy.)

I guess it’s just really hard to navigate the complexities of parent politics sometimes, but how deeply I participate in this is up to me, and if I’m always looking back at my behaviour and I can say it stands up to my own personal morals and standards, even if it might be the harder (and higher!) road at the time, I’m doing the right thing by my son in the long run.

Cruelty-Free Brands

2017 Guide to Cruelty-Free Beauty Brands

Cruelty-Free Makeup Artist Gals and Guys, I have been on journey to complete cruelty-free beauty for a couple of years now with the aim of becoming a cruelty-free makeup artist.

In case you want to join me in this noble pursuit, here is an amazing list from Cruelty Free Kitty via Pinterest. Cruelty free statuses change all the time in the beauty industry, so having an updated 2017 list is super helpful to check against before you go to the beauty counter.

The brilliant beauty brands below are all swimmingly cruelty free. Hurrah!

(More info on cruelty free and my journey below this graphic.)

About the Source

Cruelty Free Kitty is a fantastic resource for anyone wanting to go cruelty free in their beauty choices. This is actually a better resource than PETA, which offers information on the status of brands, however PETA’s site is not user-friendly and I’m not sure exactly how up-to-date it actually is. I know for certain there is some wrong or dubious information on there, so Cruelty Free Kitty is a much better go to resource if you’re curious about the animal testing policy of any beauty brand on the market.

This is a US site, however, so there are not too many Australian brands on there. I am currently working on conducting my own research and investigation on Australian brands. Let me know if you would like for me to publish my findings.

My Cruelty-Free Makeup Artist Journey

Looking back I actually can’t believe how naive I was to get around with the vague belief that animal testing on beauty products was a thing of the past. Seriously, I really thought that was something people protested back in the 90’s well before I was even in a position to put my own money in the pockets of brands participating in this.

Oh, how wrong I was.

It’s an absolute travesty that cruel, torturous animal testing is 100% prevalent in the beauty industry today. Wah! Poor bunnies and mice and CATS AND DOGS. Yup, that’s right – cats and dogs are also tested on. Look, I’m not going to go into what happens, because I know you probably have some idea of what this is about… At the very least, you know it’s horrific. Put it this way, if these animals were to be found in the conditions they exist in in someone’s home, the person responsible would be arrested for animal cruelty.

This is why I felt I could not ignore the fact that this cruel treatment is so unnecessary and wrong for brands to still be supporting, and I needed to personally step away from every last one of those brands. I am still currently phasing some products out of my pro kit, because I’m just not going to throw out products I have spent good money on. This means at this stage I still own a handful of MAC products, which I will use until they are gone, however I will not be repurchasing them.

An Honest Reflection

Since going cruelty-free I have definitely had moments where I have felt I was missing out, because I am a total beauty junkie. I see pretty shiny beauty things and I WANT. Like WAAAAANT RIGHT NOW. It’s really hard sometimes to walk away, and I am like that little kid in the grocery store dragging her feet, peering back over her shoulder at the lollipop at the counter her mum said she couldn’t have. Truly, it’s pathetic.

However, I am resolved. I will not. WILL NOT be purchasing ANY brands that test on animals anymore. Period. No way, no how, mister.

*sigh*

The struggle is real, you guys!

Having said that, since being forced to look further afield, my horizons have been broadened and I’ve discovered a ton of brands that do not test on animals. I’ve made so many amazing discoveries of makeup and skin care brands that I absolutely LOVE, which I may not have otherwise tried.

In a future post I will share some of my favourite finds of the cruelty-free variety with you. Please let me know if you would like to learn more about this. Get in contact on Facebook or Instagram, or shoot me an email. I am happy to answer all of your questions, so please feel free to get in touch!

10 YouTubers You Need to Know About

10 YouTubers YOU NEED TO KNOWFriends, I don’t know if you know this about me, but I am an avid YouTube watcher. Indeed it began with beauty videos, as would be expected, but now my subscriptions have expanded to include Mummy vloggers, Weekly Family Vlogs, a French Cook, travel tips, health advice, minimalism ideas and yoga to boot.

It’s an indulgent little list, and I thought today I’d share my top favourite channels old and new. Without further ado and in no particular order…

Carly Cristman

I love this girl! She is so down-to-earth and hilarious, yet she is super smart and talented, driven and bloody gorgeous. I like how her videos are short and sharp and helpful. Her commitment to a neutral colour palette is commendable. Carly is an entertainment television presenter, stylist, content creator, bride-to-be, packing guru, and just a cool chick.

Mariah Leonard

This gal is different from the rest. She’s intelligent and she doesn’t hype things up like most of the beauty You Tubers out there. I like that she doesn’t yell everything she says like far too many of them do. She’s just natural, and even quite dry. Although she’s not a makeup artist, I enjoy her bravery with use of colour in her makeup.

The Michalaks

Stefan, Hannah and toddler Grayson are the sweet young hipster twat family we all want to be. They were living in London, but have now moved to Bath, and they create the most stunningly beautiful weekly vlogs sharing their daily life, which could be anything from working from home between visits to the park, to travelling to the Carribean or going on a road trip to the country. They’re funny, honest, and if Gracie is not the cutest darn thing you’ve ever seen then I’ll eat my hat.

Sarah Nourse

Like everybody else right now, I’m loving learning about minimalism. Sarah and her husband live very simply in Europe, running their own business and travelling. It’s the dream, right?! I like a lot of the things they have to say and I particularly love this video, because it shows a destination that has always resided firmly on my bucket list, and has given me tons of motivation to start a-plannin’!

Yoga with Adrienne

This channel I went looking for when I kept having ads for online yoga programs and apps pop up in my Facebook feed. I thought to myself, “Pretty sure I can find that on YouTube for free…” I was right. Adrienne has literally years worth of yoga sessions on her channel. I will admit I haven’t been doing these anywhere near as frequently as I should, so I’m going to make a conceded effort to remedy this, even if it’s only doing this 5-minute morning routine every day.

French Guy Cooking

My family will tell you I am NOT on board with cooking shows. They make me hungry and frustrated, because ingredients and effort: two things I am generally lacking in. However this guy might in fact be my favourite person on the planet, who I don’t personally know. Yes, it is 70% the accent and cliche Frenchman personal style, but the other 30% is clever and funny and full of delicious eating experiences. In addition to this video, make sure you look for Alex’s travelling food vlogs (flogs!) to London and New York, and also Paris.

StyleLikeU

Stripping back to what’s underneath to talk about self-acceptance. This is so important for women and girls of 2017. The women featured are fascinating and inspiring and real. Could not love this more. This interview features Supermodel Iskra Lawrence, who I simply adore. Massive woman crush! She breaks down in tears at the end, and it’s beautiful.

Brian Friedman

Pure entertainment and fascination for the epic choreography and incredible dancers in Brian Friedman’s dance workshops. I can’t stop watching them some days.

Dr. Josh Axe

When I want to get my health nerdery on, this is the guy I turn to. He breaks down health concerns and nutritional information in a way that makes so much sense and offers solutions and recipes you can implement in your everyday life to improve your health. Love it.

Glam Life Guru

Tati Westbrook has given herself the apt title of Beauty Product Investigator. I watch Tati to save myself from spending money on sub-par products, because she is both extremely honest and knowledgeable with high expectations for beauty products and brands. I also watch her because I enjoy her very pretty face, her cute-as-a-button puppy Pooka, and her sweet-as-anything husband, James. She’s also quite funny.

The Fitness Marshall

I think we all saw this hilarious and totally awesome dance fitness video doing the rounds on Facebook about a year ago. Did you know he has a whole YouTube channel?! The most fun you can have doing cardio-centric routines.

Lazy Girl’s Guide to Incidental Charitable Giving

I know you’ve got a great heart, and you want to do your part for the environment, those less-fortunate, and of course be an amazing warrior-type woman for humankind. You’re just super lazy, girl it’s aiight, I know you give a crap! Introducing… incidental charitable giving.

Maybe you don’t know where to spend your money to help make a difference with your charitable giving, or you simply don’t have spare money to give away… but you still want to do something to help.

Girl, I got you.

I went on a mission to find the most seriously simple ways to make small regular movements towards a better world. It turns out charitable giving can be way easier than you think, and in fact these charitable causes actually make your life easier and speak straight to the heart of the laziest of girls.

Here are some incidental ways you can go about your daily life with absolutely minimal impact to your purse and your time, and still give to great causes.

Who Gives a Crap Toilet Paper Delivery

Nobody loves walking out of Woolies with a shit tonne (pun intended) of toilet paper swung over their shoulder anyway, so having your TP delivered direct to your door eradicates this humiliation from life. Okay, that’s dramatic, it honestly doesn’t bother me that much, I mean we all need toilet paper, right?

The thing is, we also all need toilets, but shockingly 40% of the worlds population don’t have access to clean toilets. At first glance to us of the privileged variety of human this may not seem like such a big deal – unpleasant, sure, but not dire… Wrong. Poor sanitation is a direct cause of diarrhoea-related diseases, which kill 900 children every day in sub-Saharan hospitals.

Who Gives a Crap has partnered with Water Aid and similar organisations, who are implementing high impact sanitation projects throughout the developing world. In fact, impressively, 50% of the company’s profits have and continue to be donated to these organisations. So far that’s almost half a million dollars.

VALUE

Now, let’s get down to it… you’re wondering about the cost, the feel, the environmental impact. I’m pleased to report that the cost is comparable with the best value toilet paper available in the supermarket at around 25c per 100 sheets. The feel is, as the company claims, soft as unicorn kisses and strong as 1000 ponies.

Who Gives a Crap is 100% recycled, so in addition to helping people, you’re helping the planet save water, trees and reduce carbon emissions by making the conscious choice to purchase some TP with purpose.

OTHER PRODUCTS

Who Gives a Crap has also created recycled tissue boxes and paper towels. All of their products have super cute packaging as an added bonus to your incidental charitable giving.

GIFT OPTION

Would you believe, you can purchase a toilet paper gift voucher? For the right person, this would be a great birthday gift! Imagine their face…

Get your Milk & Beans

If you’re local to the Sunshine Coast, grab your cup o’ joe at Milk & Beans in Mooloolaba, where 20 cents from every coffee sold goes towards initiatives that assist the homeless youth and struggling families. Love that!

DATES, MEETINGS, ANYTHING!

Why not meet a friend or love interest at Milk & Beans for coffee and chats? Shout them a coffee, and feel extra awesome about your giving. You could head in for a meeting, or take along your laptop and finish that novel already. Talk about lazy…

Moxie Box Club – Feminine Product Delivery

Another annoying purchase at least around 50%-ish of the adult population need to make regularly is feminine hygiene products. It sucks when you run out, and it’s at a crucial moment when you are in no mood to be running to the shops, dodging the chocolate aisle for fear of spending your entire weekly grocery budget on Cadbury. Delivieries are the way of the lazy girl’s future! Huzzah!

Moxie have the Moxie Box Club, where for $30 you can choose any 5 of their products to be delivered to your door. You can choose the frequency of your delivery, you’re never locked in and you can even purchase a one-off just to give it a try first. I did this, and I found it to be an efficient service that’s good value for money.

If in your delivery you choose any of the Pads for Pads products, you help girls in Uganda to stay in school during their period. See there is a lot of shame and embarrassment that surrounds periods for these young girls, because they don’t have access to proper supplies to manage their menstruation. This means they are missing out on their education because they have no choice but to stay home. AFRIpads is an organisation, which has partnered with Moxie so that every purchase from their Slenders and Sleepovers range is matched by Moxie to donate reusable pads for girls in Uganda.

We all know education is power, so keeping girls in school is so important!

GIFT A BOX, OR… DOUBLE DONATION

You can gift a Moxie Box Club to a pal. Food for thought – I actually think that any young girl just embarking on this totally shithouse new development… amazing rite of passage and celebration of womanhood… um, slightly unfortunate, but totally manageable thing we all just have to put up with… It could be made a little less unbearable by receiving a seriously cute box with prettily packaged supplies in the mail.

Alternatively, and this is something I’ve looked into, but haven’t yet given it a try yet… I had the idea that by purchasing a gift Moxie Box Club and having it sent to Share the Dignity, which is an organisation that takes donations of sanitary items and gives them to homeless women here in Australia, you’re really making your donation go a lot further.

Charity Buy – Easiest Giving Ever

This one is so simple, you don’t even have to change any of your consumer habits. Next time you’re buying online, simply spend about 30 seconds going via www.charitybuy.com.au. This website has partnered with hundreds of stores, such as Woolworths, StrawberryNet, Sephora, Etsy, ShowPo, Bonds, David Jones and Expedia to name a few, so that a small percentage of every transaction you make online goes towards a charity of your choice.

The definition of incidental charitable giving really, and you don’t have to switch brands, or buy any additional items to make an impact. There’s no entering codes at checkout, as once you’ve clicked via the Charity Buy website, you’ve already alerted the website you’re purchasing from that you want your purchase to benefit your nominated charity. The percentage of giving will range from 2% to a very generous 7% of your transaction. Whether you’re buying beauty products, clothes, jewellery, underwear, holidays, gifts or just your groceries, everything you intend to buy online should be bought via this site – it’s no skin off your nose and you’re doing something to help the world.

GIFT OPTION

Well really you could buy any present you would normally, just via the link above. Easy!

Thankyou. Eradicating poverty.

Another incredible Australian organisation doing so so so much good in the world. Thankyou. is a social enterprise working with the firm belief global poverty can be ended in our lifetime. That is a huge call, but I dig is so hard. Wildly ambitious, but you know what? I believe them, 100%.

So far the company, which gives 100% of profits to projects in 18 countries in excess of $4.6million, which translates to getting food, safe water and sanitation and child and maternal health services to hundreds and thousands of people in need.

I’m sure you’ve seen their products around, as their stockists include Woolworths of course. Bottled water, bathroom products, baby products and muesli bars are some of the products available. Prices are reasonable/comparable, so it’s easy to make the switch. About a year ago, I put a mini review of their peppermint body wash and lotion on my Instagram feed, and I have repurchased these many times since.

WHERE TO BUY

Many of the Thankyou. products are available in Woolworths in Australia. You can also order online.

GIFT OPTION

There are some lovely Thankyou. Baby collections you can gift to your pregnant pal, for example. I have personally just ordered the Chapter One book for myself. It’s a pay what you want scheme, but if you pay $40 you receive a free journal. Nice! Considering the story behind Thank you., I think this would be an absolutely incredible gift for anyone with a giving – or entrepreneurial – spirit. Three TEENAGERS from Melbourne started this amazing social enterprise. I cannot wait to read this book… watch this space.

Got a website? Be part of this hero movement – no money required.

Destiny Rescue has long been my charity of choice. I am in awe of everything they do as an NGO to save girls from sexual slavery. You know we all have that one thing that hits us right in the guts… well human trafficking is the one that kills me. The idea of buying and selling people – actual people – and often children, sickens me to my very core.

The amazing people running Destiny Rescue actually go into the brothels in countries, such as Cambodia and the Philippines, and remove underage girls, who were sold or stolen for sexual slavery. Spine-tingling stuff!

Destiny Rescue then puts those girls up in safe houses with access to counselling and gives them training to help them forge new careers in areas, such as hairdressing, sewing, waitressing and jewellery-making. They also have prevention programs in place providing alternative means of income for families in deep poverty. At-risk communities are being empowered with the education and tools to farm and breed livestock.

Every year I purchase their jewellery as Christmas presents for my family, and I give a monthly donation. More recently, though, I discovered another way to help that costs me absolutely nothing. Because I run two websites – one with very with high traffic, I can help just by placing a banner on the blog posts I’m putting up anyway!

If you own a website of any kind – high traffic or otherwise – you can help get the word out by placing a banner somewhere on your site, like the one above. You don’t even need to have a blog, you could put it on your contact page, about page – or heck, even on your home page!

GIFT OPTION

You can give an unforgettable gift in your friend’s name of a child’s education or uniform, a safe house welcome pack with linen and other personal supplies for a rescued child, hairdressing and sewing training, and more.

GIVE BACK ON YOUR HOLIDAY

Destiny Rescue run tours through Cambodia and Thailand, where you can visit the homes of the rescued girls and witness the amazing work being done on the ground, as well as experience an incredible holiday in a most beautiful part of the world.

Will you be doing some incidental charitable giving?

What do you think, gals? Can you see yourself making the switch to any of the above? Let me know on social media, or if you know of any other ways to make an impact that’s super easy, all us lazy girls will get behind, please share!

My Makeups, Wedding

BRIDAL MAKEUP | Brigitte’s natural Noosa wedding

Noosa bridal makeup

Bride, Brigitte, chose one of my absolute favourite photographers to capture her Noosa wedding day when she married her love, Will. Karen Buckle has a way of making light magical in her images, and Karen herself seems pretty darn magical, too. You know when you meet those people who have a shiny, glittering soul that seeps out of them? That’s Karen.

Brigitte herself has a bit of the glitters about her, too, as you can clearly see from these pictures of her wedding day. The beautiful bride went for a very natural bridal makeup look with flattering warm tones on her eyes and a nude lip. This bridal makeup design by Senior STMA Makeup Artist, Melissa, went perfectly with Brigitte’s boho-style Anna Campbell bridal gown. I love Anna Campbell dresses for Noosa brides; it’s almost as if they were designed for this place – they are simple and flowing with special glam intricacies to add that little something extra, like the glint of the sun on the Noosa waters.

Holiday, Special Offer

Christmas Gift Guide for Gals

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, have you heard? Like many of us, I LOVE shopping for gifts for my family and friends. I enjoy every part of it from agonising over what they would like, to making the final selections, picking up some sweet stocking-fillers and happening upon that last-minute gift that’s just perfect.

Here I have for you a Christmas Gift Guide that’s all about us gals. Some is beauty, some of it’s just cute as. Enjoy!

new-chocolate-bar-eyeshadow-palette-1-940

Let’s start with one for the makeup lovers, because I’m sure there are a few among us. I couldn’t live without my Chocolate Bar palette by Too Faced. This is a great everyday palette with plenty of shades fit for creating everyday makeups right up to full glamour. There are both matte eyeshadows and shimmer eyeshadows in this palette, as well as two highlight shades – one versatile matte shade and one very pretty pink that’s buildable for that glow we have all been obsessed with in 2016. Find this one at Mecca Cosmetica for $70.00.

Protect and adorn your iPhone with one of these pretties from Casetify. There are aproximately one gazillion designs to choose from. I like these cuties – one for the brides among us, one for the brow addicts, one for the minimalists. Use code: 2more for $10 off your purchase of 2 or more items.

I am lusting after these absolutely gorgeous Agate stone book ends from Oliver Bonas myself! If you’re going to order these, you might want to do it quickly, as they will be shipped from the UK. I must admit I found these via the Gift Guide of YouTuber Estee Lalonde.

mimco-scarf

You really can’t go wrong with a summery scarf from Mimco, and every gal I know would welcome one of these into her wardrobe with open arms and a willing neck.

goals-with-soul-danielle-laporte

In the interest of creating a holistic gift guide, I had to include a little something from one of my all-time favourites, Danielle Laporte. I think I’ll have to gift this one to myself so I can kick off 2017 right. There are audio files, monthly check ins, and the paper workbook included in the Goals with Soul 2017 bundle, so no matter how you best learn and work through things, you can smash your 2017 goals.

I always salivate over any Samantha Wills jewellery, but these Amethyst and Rose Gold Spanish Moth Grand earrings are just a little bit extra special.

For the gal who has everything, a makeup lesson with yours truly would of course be a winner.

Happy Christmas Shopping everyone!

WEDDING FILM | Samara + Jesse’s Caloundra Wedding

Samara & Jesse from bxcsmxth on Vimeo.

Doing the makeup for bride Samara and her bridesmaids was less like work and more like hanging out with my girlfriends for a fun morning of chill pampering for one seriously gorgeous Caloundra wedding. As a wedding makeup artist, getting everyone ready with a view overlooking the pool at Caloundra’s Ultiqa Shearwater Resort with some cool people is a dream.

By my side making the gals’ hairs look super purty was Nicole from Sass & Niki’s Wedding Hair and on photos and film was the incredible Bec from BXCSMXTH. The film above is just one of Bec’s beautiful masterpieces. She captures the love and the feel of Sunshine Coast weddings so well!

The wedding ceremony itself took place at one of my favourite spots on the planet, Currimundi Lake. They ceremony was styled by Style Le Aisle with a boho feel with macrame, while the bride and groom maintained a classic elegant style of dress. Samara’s bridal makeup was classic and pretty with natural warm brown and champagne tones and a little slick of clean gel eyeliner to define the eyes. A my-lips-but-better tone was the chosen lip colour, which was one of my fave nudes from Harlotte Cosmetics.

For the bridesmaids, I created a soft brown smokey eye with burgundy through the crease to match perfectly with their stylish bridesmaid dresses. Everyone had a small touch of rose gold in a nod to the other subtle rose gold elements throughout the bridal party fashion.

I love it this beachy classic, yet relaxed Caloundra wedding!

My Makeups

STMA in The Bride’s Tree Magazine

the-brides-tree-magazine-_-volume-19-_-spring-2016

It’s always wonderful to be asked to be part of a collaborative shoot. As a makeup artist, it allows me to let my creativity flow, try new things, or just use all my favourite products with all my favourite techniques.

When Nicole from Sass & Niki’s Wedding Hair came to me with the idea for a beach shoot with a horse and a dress from Grace Loves Lace, it was really easy to say a firm YESPLEASEICAN’TWAIT.

Our pals from Style Le Aisle were brought in to provide some props, and the crew from Wandering Abodes to set up one of their sweet glamping tipis to create a styled chill zone in the dunes.

No wedding inspo shoot would be complete without some insanely beautiful florals, and nobody does that better than Ginger Lily & Rose Floral Studio, who fashioned some peonies into a level of gloriousness that’s hard to look away from. The coral peonies in the bouquet and on horse Tango’s floral necklace inspired the lip colour I used in the bridal makeup for this shoot – Harlotte Cosmetics lipstick in Mistress. I went with a simply bronzed eye makeup with a wing for a glam, yet simple beachy makeup style for a beach bride with a bohemian vibe.

When Elephant Met Zebra rounded out our team on the camera, and produced these next level images. And that’s why this shoot ended up on the cover of The Bride’s Tree Magazine. Yes, I happen to know the Editor, but I mean seriously – could you imagine a more gorgeous cover than this one before you? I also happen to know she’s always impartial in her editorial decisions. And pretty.

shelly-001-copy shelly-013  Model Sharri’s blonde bob in beachy curls with her both natural and simultaneously glam bridal makeup are the perfect pairing for a relaxed boho wedding style. shelly-118 As a Caloundra-based makeup artist, it’s always awesome to work on a wedding inspo shoot at my favourite Caloundra beach for weddings – Shelly Beach. Of course I absolutely love my job doing bridal makeup all across the Sunshine Coast. It’s a great gig, I gotta say.

BRIDAL MAKEUP | Amy’s glam Noosa wedding

Amy Dautopalous

In the lead up to Amy’s wedding, we had such a lovely time getting to know one another over email and at her trials. Yes, Amy actually had two trials. The first time we met she wanted to try something she hadn’t ever tried before – a full smokey eye to amp up the glam for her wedding day. Although she was having a fairly relaxed beach wedding, she also wanted to turn heads on her wedding day, a goal I am always more than willing to help along!

Now you really don’t know until you try… but as it turns out, a smokey black and grey eyeshadow style wasn’t for Amy. Never mind. The next time we met, we worked together to come up with something that was much more “Amy”. By this stage it was a couple of months down the track, and much more of her wedding style had come together. We decided with her plans for her flowers and styling, as well as her completion and affinity for all things girly, we were better off creating a warm-toned fresh and youthful bridal makeup with a little pink in the mix.

We still wanted Amy’s pretty eyes to stand out, but without weighing them down with heavy eyeshadow, so we kept a little of the depth with some long lashes and flattering upper lash line definition. We kept the glam in there, but settled it in with a rosy pink lip.

The bridesmaids wore a bright pink lip colour with a gentle bronzed smokey eye. All of the girls had incredible long locks, which were styled into voluminous curls by Jacinta from Coastal Style Mobile Hairdressing, who is always such a pleasure to work with.

The lovely Tahlea Blunt Photography took these photos and was kind enough to share them with me. She has also blogged many more images from Amy and Adam’s gorgeous Noosa wedding, which is well worth a look. Amy Dautopalous_1 Amy Dautopalous_4Amy Dautopalous_2 Amy Dautopalous_3 Amy Dautopalous_5 I absolutely LOVED Amy’s dress! And didn’t the girls do a fab job of putting together their own bouquets? Amy Dautopalous_6

BRIDAL MAKEUP | Emily’s natural look for her Buderim Wedding

Emily & Zach (2016)-442[5]Natural beauty Emily wanted a natural look with just a little drama for her bridal makeup – a wedding is a special occasion after all!

Emily married her love, Zachary, in a serene ceremony in Buderim’s Wirreanda Park. Here’s what she had to say about her Bridal Makeup experience with STMA Senior Makeup Artist, Hannah…

“I just wanted to take the time to personally thank you for lending me Hannah to do the make up for my wedding! She did an incredible job of making us all feel comfortable and ourselves in the way that she did our make up. She also contributed to the relaxed atmosphere on the morning of our wedding and felt more like a friend to us than someone who was there for work. Please pass on my warmest gratitude to Hannah for being perfect for our special day! It was the people that were involved in our wedding that added so much warmth to our day.”

Look at that precision – that’s a thing of beauty. And complementing her skin tone and bringing additional definition to the eye, Hannah used a peach-gold shimmer with diffused natural brown tones on the lid.  Sunshine Coast wedding makeup artist _ bridal makeup artist _ Sally Townsend Makeup Artistry6To complete the natural look, a nude lip with just the right depth of colour. bridal makeup artist sunshine coast _ Sally Townsend Makeup Artist_Emily & Zach (2016)-422[4] Emily & Zach (2016)-442[5]bridal makeup artist sunshine coast _ Sally Townsend Makeup Artist_2
